Is College Worth The Cost? Pros Vs. Cons

According to Rebecca Mead, staff writer for The New Yorker , college teaches students “to nurture critical thought; to expose individuals to the signal accomplishments of humankind; to develop in them an ability not just to listen actively but to respond intelligently.” [24] In 2011 74% of students said college helped them “grow intellectually” and 69% said college helped them grow and mature as people. [25] Jonathan D. Fitzgerald, MA, Visiting Professor at Eastern Nazarene College, argues, “The value of a liberal arts college education –to you, to employers– is that you’ve spent four years in a place where you were forced to consider new ideas, to meet new people, to ask new questions, and to learn to think, to socialize, to imagine. If you graduate, you will get a degree, but if you are not a very different person from who are you are today, then college failed.” [26] Read More

Yes, College is Worth It: Busting Myths about Higher Education

So how do we know what’s a myth and what’s real? Knox Magazine set out to take on a few of the headlines-or bust a few of the common myths-about higher education to help us all better understand why a college degree is still worthy of pursuit.

Tuition, room, and board can add up quickly, particularly if you attend a private school, where the sticker price can exceed $50,000 per year. Even in-state tuition at many public colleges and universities is upwards of $20,000 per year. A college education does cost more today than it did a decade ago, but when you account for inflation, the growth in tuition, room, and board is not accelerating. At Knox, the increase in net price (tuition, board, and fees) has mirrored inflation over the last decade.

Further, the vast majority of students who attend college do not pay the sticker price, thanks to scholarships, federal financial aid, and institutional aid. The average price for a college education is $16,164 per year; at Knox, that average price is $20,804, and 98 percent of our students receive some form of aid, whether that be financial aid or merit scholarships.

Average Annual Percentage Increase in Net Price at Private, Nonprofit Colleges by Decade

MYTH: Colleges spend too much money on fancy residence halls and climbing walls.

As the competition for students has risen among colleges and universities, climbing walls, lazy rivers, and other amenities are now found on some college and university campuses as a means to make their schools more attractive to prospective students. The additions to campus aren’t always paid for by tuition; for example, Louisiana State University covered the cost of its new recreation center, which includes a lazy river, with student fees. But a large number of college and university campuses haven’t entered into what some call the new “arms race,” either because they choose not to or face budgetary or other constraints don’t allow for such amenities. In fact, once you start to read the stories that highlight these amenities, you’ll find that these may be more of an exception than a rule.

At Knox, we are mission-driven in all that we do and have worked diligently to control costs so that our tuition dollars are used to support the core inputs of a liberal arts education- high-quality faculty and staff who are dedicated to undergraduates, small class sizes, modern scientific equipment and instructional technology, and opportunities for students to put their education to practice outside the classroom.

3 Reasons Why College Is Not Worth It

1. You Likely Will Graduate With Student Loan Debt

Because college costs have increased so much, it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to cover the entire cost out of your savings or earnings from a part-time job; instead, you’ll probably have to use student loans to cover at least some of the expense. According to The Institute for College Access and Success, 62% of 2019 college graduates left school with student loan debt, with an average balance of $28,950.

2. High-Paying Jobs Aren’t Guaranteed

The average starting salary for college graduates right out of school is about $51,000, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers. While that’s a comfortable income for most, many graduates will earn less than that. And if you have hefty student loan debt that exceeds your income, you may struggle to make ends meet.

3. It Can Take More Than Four Years to Graduate

When it comes to getting a bachelor’s degree, you’ll probably anticipate graduating within four years. However, that may not be realistic. The National Student Clearinghouse Research Center found that just 58% of students who enrolled in college in 2012 earned a degree within six years. The rest of the students were either still in school or dropped out.

For every additional year you’re in school, you rack up additional expenses and likely will need to take on more student loan debt to pay for your education. Taking six years or more to graduate can cause you to leave school with even more debt, and it may be difficult to dig yourself out.

Alternatives to College

Community College

At a community college, you can earn an associate’s degree or complete certificate programs that lead to stable careers. For example, the following career paths require two-year degrees and have above-average salaries:

Trade School

Trade schools, vocational schools or technical colleges provide hands-on training for different skilled careers. The programs tend to be much shorter than college programs, with students graduating in six months to two years.

There is an increased demand for trained trade professionals, and you can earn a comfortable income. For example, these are the median incomes for the following trades according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics:

Bootcamps

If you’re interested in software and web development, attending a coding bootcamp can be a pathway to a potentially lucrative career. According to The Course Report, the average bootcamp program lasts for just 14 weeks, and you can land a new job in data science, app development or cybersecurity.

Entrepreneurship

If you have an idea for a business, entrepreneurship may be a better career path than attending college. As an entrepreneur, you can be your own boss and set your own salary. The average salary for entrepreneurs is approximately $43,000 per year.

However, keep in mind that starting your own business can be risky, and it may be several years before your business turns a profit. To get help developing your ideas and creating a business plan, take advantage of resources offered by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Con

College stress can lead to health problems and other negative consequences.

40.2% of college students reported feeling “frequently overwhelmed” in a 2012 survey about stress levels. [75] According to the University of Florida’s Counseling & Wellness Center, “The competition for grades, the need to perform, relationships, fear of AIDS, career choice, and many other aspects of the college environment cause stress.” [76] According to the Director of Student Health Services at Biola University, college stress can lead to “headaches, weight gain, chronic digestive disorders, fatigue, increases [in] blood pressure, insomnia, teeth grinding in sleep, general irritability, reoccurring feeling of hopelessness, depression and anxiety and low self-esteem.” [77]

Do what you love, love what you do

Make a list of your priorities. Really take the time to think this through. Then, ask yourself if what you are doing each day reflects them. For example, if you believe your top priority is spending more time with your family, but you consistently take on extra hours at work, you’re not really prioritizing things in the way you think you are.

How to Do What You Love and Love What You Do to Achieve More

Do what you love

To do something well you have to like it. That idea is not exactly novel. We’ve got it down to four words: "Do what you love." But it’s not enough just to tell people that. Doing what you love is complicated.

The very idea is foreign to what most of us learn as kids. When I was a kid, it seemed as if work and fun were opposites by definition. Life had two states: some of the time adults were making you do things, and that was called work; the rest of the time you could do what you wanted, and that was called playing. Occasionally the things adults made you do were fun, just as, occasionally, playing wasn’t—for example, if you fell and hurt yourself. But except for these few anomalous cases, work was pretty much defined as not-fun.

The world then was divided into two groups, grownups and kids. Grownups, like some kind of cursed race, had to work. Kids didn’t, but they did have to go to school, which was a dilute version of work meant to prepare us for the real thing. Much as we disliked school, the grownups all agreed that grownup work was worse, and that we had it easy.

Teachers in particular all seemed to believe implicitly that work was not fun. Which is not surprising: work wasn’t fun for most of them. Why did we have to memorize state capitals instead of playing dodgeball? For the same reason they had to watch over a bunch of kids instead of lying on a beach. You couldn’t just do what you wanted.

I’m not saying we should let little kids do whatever they want. They may have to be made to work on certain things. But if we make kids work on dull stuff, it might be wise to tell them that tediousness is not the defining quality of work, and indeed that the reason they have to work on dull stuff now is so they can work on more interesting stuff later. [ 1 ]

Once, when I was about 9 or 10, my father told me I could be whatever I wanted when I grew up, so long as I enjoyed it. I remember that precisely because it seemed so anomalous. It was like being told to use dry water. Whatever I thought he meant, I didn’t think he meant work could literally be fun—fun like playing. It took me years to grasp that.

Learning how to do what you love

If you’re overwhelmed by the prospect of making drastic changes to do what you love for a living, take baby steps. Getting to know yourself is the first step in learning to love what you do. Here are some ways to get in touch with what inspires you.

1. Focus on your strengths

Before you can learn how to do what you love, you must know what it is that you love to do! This is a process of self-discovery that puts you in touch with your core values, strengths and assets. In his Building the Ultimate Business Advantage course , marketing expert Jay Abraham states that many entrepreneurs are unhappy because they are constantly trying to improve their weaknesses. Jay advocates focusing on your strengths when deciding what type of business to start and putting a growth strategy in place. When you identify what you enjoy doing and the activities you’re able to master relatively quickly, you’ll achieve more meaningful successes that lead to fulfillment.

Creating a career where you do what you love for a living is about spending the majority of your time practicing and acting on your strengths. This isn’t just a recipe for increasing your passion for business, either – when potential customers see how passionate you are, they’re more likely to catch on, which dramatically increases your probability of business success .

2. Find your passions

The next step in developing a career in which you love what you do is in thinking clearly about your purpose . What empowers you ? What do you wish you could wake up and do every day? These answers must fall in line with what your strengths are. For some people, the ability to do what you love means helping others. For a different person, it’s expressing their thoughts and feelings creatively. Others value travel or spending time with their family. Once you’ve really thought about what living an extraordinary life looks like for you, consider how you’ll achieve it.

Start Doing What You’re Passionate About

So many people walk around in life “looking for” their passion. They look for it as if true passion is some mysterious thing that is difficult to find and runs away once you find it. However, the problem is rarely a lack of passion.

For example, maybe you love building model cars or painting pet portraits. Yet, each day you work a completely unrelated job and make no time for the activity you already know you love. The truth is you probably don’t need to find your passion; you just need to start doing what you already know you’re passionate about [1] .

Do What You Love vs. Love What You Do

What is it about the post-baby-boomer generations who struggle so with having to work for a living, especially having to work a job one doesn’t want to do?

I suppose it has to do with the conflicting modern messages about chasing your dreams. Raised by parents who endured the depression, baby boomers were more often told they were lucky to have a job, any job. Perhaps younger generations have softened.

A friend challenged me and said that there are exceptions, that not everyone can do what they love. After initially feeling sad about this pessimistic notion, especially as one raised to always chase your dreams, more pondering has led me to an expanded view.

No, not everyone should chase their passion. In fact, chasing your passion can be a dangerous game. I’m reading a highly recommended book right now called So Good They Can’t Ignore You by Cal Newport. I think any of you caught in a predicament similar to my friend should read this book. Actually, I recommend it to all of you. Exploring the idea that chasing your passions isn’t always the best answer, the author uses very fine examples like the great surfboard shaper Al Merrick, comedian Steve Martin, and then lesser-known individuals with more common jobs like administrative cubicle work, masonry, etc. Cal is a brilliant guy, and I’m sure I’ll read his next two books, which look equally thought-provoking.

Anyway… are there exceptions? Are we wasting life unless we’re doing what we love? I still say yes, but not exactly in the way that you might think. I suppose I could bring my own life experience in as an example and jumping off point.

Falling in love with the banjo, I majored in music in college and then moved to Nashville with a band. I was doing what I loved. Until I wasn’t. The stresses of making my passion an occupation pushed me up against a wall. Not only did the pressure start to drain the joy of playing, but I was also shown the guts of the music business. Let me tell you, what I saw wasn’t pretty.

The American Culture

Many philosophers have come up with different definitions of culture. All the definitions that are available for this word are backed up with ideologies and some facts. Therefore, it becomes hard to rule out that an individual definition does not fit the word. However, some philosophers and institutions can be considered to have provided a more detailed definition for culture. The Centre for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA) at the University of Minnesota has one of the best definitions for this word. Here, culture is defined as a pattern of character traits, common knowledge, and understanding shared with a group of people through socialization.

One of the main reasons why this definition can be considered to be the best is the fact that it acknowledges culture is not all about behaviors but a lot of factors combined (Lysgard 187). Character trait of individuals is just one element that can be used to distinguish cultural differences. Other things such as knowledge, language, understanding, and fashion also define the culture of a particular group of people. The definition given by the University of Minnesota is also clear on the fact that culture is attained from socialization.

Some people define culture as the shared knowledge that a group creates for the sake of expressing themselves. The definition is okay since it has stated that a generation will always need a common way of expressing their opinions. However, it does not represent culture as a broad aspect as it is defined by CARLA. A good definition of culture is one that sees more than just a common knowledge and language amidst the community (Birukou and Blanzieri 21).

Linton in his book, The Cultural Background of Personality, defines culture as a connection of behaviors within a group of people who can also transmit these traits to other generations. The definition given by the University of Minnesota does not state anything about members of a community being the ones to communicate cultural elements to other interested parties from other communities. There is a possibility that a person can adopt a culture through reading and watching (Lysgard 193).

American culture is one that is a combination of people from different beliefs. The United States has a significant population of 320 million as per the latest census. Immigrants have also been finding a real home in the U.S. It is an indication that America is an intercultural community. People from Africa, Asia, and Europe have over the years adopted into the American system (Zimmermann). Therefore, the American culture is considered to be a configuration of various lifestyles. Over centuries, many changes have been seen in the lifestyle of the American people read about this in the american identity essay.

We can describe the current Culture in the United States under different areas of a community. One key factor to look at is the aspect of language in this community. According to the statistics released by the U.S Census Bureau, there are over three hundred languages spoken in the country. It stands out to be one of the unique elements of the American culture. Despite having a lot of languages in this country, there are four major non-English ones widely spoken today. They include German, French, Spanish and Chinese.

The religious end of the American culture today is also a factor to analyze. Many years back, the United States was considered to have accepted Christianity as the only option for religion. In those days, most people were Christians while a few groups could openly say that they have no religious affiliation. The pattern started to change over years as people from different parts of the globe moved into the country. Today, the nation’s culture is made up of individuals from various religious beliefs. The data released by ABC polls in 2012 indicated that 83% of people in America are attached to the beliefs of Christians, while other religions such as Judaism and Islamic believes have been introduced. However, the other religions are considered to be minors since their representation is less than two percent. It shows that there is still a big number of Americans who do not relate to any religious stands.

Art is another crucial element in the culture of the people of America. Today, American movies and Television shows are being watched across the globe with a lot of positive responses being reported. Hollywood has been the center of quality productions in the world for many years now. On the other hand, Broadway is proving America to be also a home to theatrical presentations. In the field of music, the U.S has musicians who perform across the globe. It is a sign that the American culture is being spread worldwide through music.

The American people are considered to be a pluralistic society that easily accepts new individuals into their community. For a long time, the U.S citizens have been tolerant thus immigrants find an easy time to adopt the system (Zimmermann). Recently, the Government of the United States has announced that it will accommodate more refugees from different parts of the world within a year.

Despite having a lot of positive elements of the American culture, there are few unpleasant traits among some Americans. For instance, the younger citizens are reportedly becoming law-offenders. Today, most of the traffic offenders in the U.S are the young people. They are considered to be always in a hurry, and they also think going against the laws without hurting someone is not a crime. It is the reason young drivers are nowadays disobeying traffic lights when the other side of the highway is clear (Olson).

Most of the American citizens are known to have the culture of being law-abiding. However, this is prone to change in the future with many young people getting involved in crimes. If caution is not taken early and the law-breakers penalized, the next generation is going to be hard to control (Olson). The culture of tolerance might also fade in the coming years. It is going to be hard for citizens who break laws to remain tolerant with new people trying to fit into their systems.

However, the culture of America is expected to become more diverse in the coming generations. Taking an example of the film industry, Hollywood has opened up, and many artists from other parts of the world are now making it big there. We expect more foreign actors and actresses to perform in Hollywood movies. The American culture is also expected to spread across the globe through music. From the trends, U.S hip hop and RnB artists will in the future stage more performances in other continents. As the culture of America diversifies, it is also going to be adopted in many parts of the world.

How to Write a Persuasive Essay

Just like its name says, you write a persuasive essay to convince your audience about a certain point of view. You will need to use strong arguments and back up your writing with clear data to have the audience by your side. A successful persuasive essay has a catchy introduction, a strong and proved thesis statements, and a strong conclusion. Apart from research, you should also follow a logical flow and convince your readers that you know what you are talking about. Thus, if you want to know how to write a persuasive essay, then you should keep reading this article.

How to Write a Persuasive Essay

  1. Decide on which side you are

When you decide to write a persuasive essay, this means that you have a controversial topic about which you are going to argue about. Moreover, even though you are passionate about the subject and you have an opinion on it, this doesn’t mean that this side is the easiest to demonstrate. Therefore, before you decide on which side you are going to argue, you should carefully check whether you can gather enough information to support your ideas. You should always remember that irrespective of the side of the barricade you choose to be, you will need strong evidence to support your ideas.

  1. Do extensive research

As we already mentioned, you will need strong arguments to support your ideas. This means that you will need to spend some time to research the topic and come with clear examples for each statement that you make. Even though you may find plenty of information when you start researching, you should narrow down your search and choose only the credible sources. For example, you can also add a touch of uniqueness and organize interviews with some of the key professionals in the field. Even though, instead of doing all this research, you may ask yourself the question “can someone write my paper for me”, you should have this experience and learn how to write a persuasive essay.

  1. Write an outline

A persuasive essay should start with the introduction. You use it to introduce your topic. What is more, it should also contain the thesis statement which then leads to the position you are going to adopt. The body includes the supporting paragraphs where you give evidence to explain and support your ideas. On the other hand, you should also include an antithesis paragraph where you explain the other side of the barricade. However, you should still come with arguments and demonstrate why your point of view is better. Finally, you will end with a strong conclusion where you summarize the ideas and persuade your audience to follow your point of view.

  1. Provoke emotions

If you want to write a successful persuasive essay, you shouldn’t forget about emotions. This doesn’t mean that you should become dramatic, just to impress your audience. You can be convincing and emotional if you present clear statistics which show the truth about the situation you are presenting. Furthermore, you shouldn’t be afraid of using strong language and involve the reader in your story. You should use all the “weapons” to involve the reader in your story and make him care about your topic.

Once you have finished your persuasive essay, you should resist the temptation of reading it immediately. Let it breathe for one or two days and give your mind time to assimilate the information you presented. Once this period has passed, you can start reading and editing it as needed.

Language and Communication: The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat by Oliver Sacks

Introduction

Language is a way of communication, that is either written or spoken and consists of the use of words in conventional or structured ways. Structured convention involves the use of symbols which are arranged in particular means for purposes of conveying meaning. Language can either be natural or artificial. The native language is established by human cultures while the fake expression is created by small teams or individuals (Beattie & Ellis, 2017). The target example has failed to use the concept of language and communication to discuss the issue of transport properly.

In the target example, Sacks needed to use language and communication to guide the audience to understand the major ideas of the various concepts of the disorders of neurology. The author has organized the stories into four parts for easier communication with the audience. As a way of communicating with the audience, the author describes incidental moments of all the patients in all stories. The approach is considered to be not only engaging but also empowering. As readers, the author introduces a language to the readers that makes sense to them throughout the piece about natural science (Cappellin, 2015). The word used in the books makes it easy for readers to understand the manner in which the brain works.

The information provided in the target example as far as natural science is concerned can be beneficial to general readers who are not used to psychology and Neurology issues. Sacks utilize a public as well as engaging language that assists the broad audience in comprehending the discussed stories. The language enables the audience with postscripts that define the historical backgrounds or advanced studies and unique codes in the Neurology discipline (Cappellini, 2015). The style and communication in the various stories enable the readers to involve the worlds of the patients hence promoting understanding.

Unfortunately, the introductory part of the book may be confusing to the average readers. In the opening part, the author mentions Aphemia, Aphonia and other neurological words for the first time (Cappellini, 2015).Even though the terms are part of the neurological language, average readers who do not have the neurological background are likely to remain in the dark or not to understand the point being driven home at all. The author needs to use the characteristics of excellent communication and language to describe each of the terms he introduces so that no audience is left behind. The book uses its stories to bring the words to the language that the readers can easily understand. As part of effective communication, the complicated novels such as The Vision Hildegard begins by the explanation of the neurological disorder that has the complicated language which could confuse or trouble the readers have been discussed before the actual content of the book. Proper style and communication strategy assist in relaying the intended information to the audience. Readers may switch off their minds right from the introductory part of the target example if the discussed information does not express the appropriate and inclusive kind of language. As long as the word used does not fit the needs of the readers, communication is interfered with hence hindering the intended purpose of the author (Beattie & Ellis, 2017).

As discussed in class, language is one of the characteristics which differentiate humans from animals. The difference comes in due to the different structure of the human vocals. In target example, the author uses written language structure to reach out to his audience (Cappellini, 2015). Just like the spoken language, the written word is effective in conveying the intended messages. However, it is essential that the author addresses the issues that may hinder communication as far as the language used is concerned. The human language and communication happen to be unique phenomena and with no significant analogs in the world of animals. It is not worth supposing that existing gaps between the word and the information being communicated in the target example are bridgeable. As such, it is wise for the author of the book to use a functional language particularly at the points where the content concerns issues that are profoundly neurological. The only way for average readers to understand the information being communicated is through use of simple language that is not only attractive but also understandable to all (Beattie & Ellis, 2017).

As far as the content is concerned, the author provides stories about the neurological disorders of the patients that he treats. The material offers essential communication to psychologists, neurologists, and the general readers. For purposes of enhancing proper notification, the patients are organized into four different parts. The similar patterns of the behavior of patients, as well as psychology, assist in understanding the dysfunction concept of the human brain (Cappellini, 2015). Additionally, communication can be achieved using other means. The different methods could be considered as a language since they are understandable to the general readers (Beattie & Ellis, 2017). Sacks describe the significance of music for the brains of humans. Music can be treated as a form of language which is understandable to a particular group of people.

Language and communication form the basis of the association amongst people in the society. When language used in a particular context is not useful, communication is hindered, and people fail to learn from one another or the intended information being passed (Beattie & Ellis, 2017). The target example has tried to make communication as efficient as possible. However, there are aspects where the book fails to employ some of the essential characteristics of effective communication. For purposes of enhancing proper communication with all readers regardless of their background about neurology, it is necessary to provide a detailed explanation of the terms involved in the content so that the language becomes appealing to the average readers (Cappellini, 2015). Additionally, the various language structures could be used where necessary in the target example to make the communication process as simple as possible.

On the side of readers, it is essential to use logics to understand the information being passed by the target example. For instance, some terms may be new to the readers of the book. If the words are not explained, then the readers should use logics to link the information provided by the terms hence establish meanings. The logic can be primarily described as a normative, formal and symbolic way of reasoning. Readers are required to have the reasoning skills to develop the intended meanings of information being passed. The logics may be limited to semantics but can still apply to all communication issues (Beattie & Ellis, 2017).

Systems of measurements

The two measurement systems, metric, and US, can be both used for converting units. Though, the metric system is simpler and much preferred than the US system. This is because it is the standardized system used globally and is approved by the international systems of units. Logically, it is easy to compute with a metric system(“Metric Versus U.S. Units”). That is, a conversion can be achieved by dividing or multiplying by a fraction of 10.   Additionally, one unit of measure comprises of one type of measurement.

For example, if we were to convert 7,865 Hectoliters (Hl) to liters then to milliliters. This is how we would go about it: 1hectolitre is equal to 100 liters. Then we ask ourselves, how many Liters are there in 7865 Hectoliters? Hence, we multiply 7,865 by 100 to give us 786,500litres. 1 liter is equivalent to 1000ml. therefore 786500 Multiply by 1000 amounts to 786,500,000 ml.

Take the example of a milk processing company. The company produces 7,865 Hectoliters of milk daily. This includes the milk they receive from farmers and that which they produce from their own firm.  In order to distribute the milk to the market, the company needs to pack the milk in small proportions of 500ml, 1litre, 2liters, and 5liters sachets. This means that the company(“Metric Versus U.S. Units”). If the company was to pack the sachets in equal proportions, then this is how they would calculate:

To achieve this, we need to convert all units to milliliters: 500ml: 1000ml: 2000ml: 5000ml: we divide 786,500,000ml by the total number of proportions [4] to milk in each. So, each proportion will be represented by 196,625,000ml of milk. Then we divide each proportion by the total amount represented by the proportion. Theme of Oppression

The theme of oppression has been the significant concentration for the two authors: Hughes and Eliot. In some papers and other pieces of work, they have discussed this theme in totality and placed so much concentration in it to the extent that it has been the sign of identity to all of them. They have described and shown it in some ways as well; a pure show that they were passionate about educating people on this and also telling people that the act of oppression is not on end at all. It is also very clear from all their pieces of work that oppression is a traditional act that has lived amongst the people and keeps on breeding amongst the same people as well. It is true to say that Hughes and Eliot have concentrated and articulated the theme of oppression to the best of their knowledge.

Langston Hughes has shown this first in “Harlem” where it has stood out the extremes that oppression can lead people. The oppression that is talked about here is just through the use of authority or the application of power (Hughes, Pp. 1-4). In any case, where one can identify oppression, it also stands out obvious that leadership and an aspect of authority is always key leading to this heinous act as such. This is a poem in which the narrator can describe a black girl who had a dream but again the dream kept on disappearing from her. She did not have sufficient freedom, and factually she always keeps the dream alive of having her freedom go through as such. This author here is also hiding from oppression by hiding in the attic; this has been showcased by the author through the utmost use of personification and symbolism. The wall here in the poem is also shown symbolically as something which is blocking her dream; something that is impeding what she wants in life from happening (Hughes, Pp. 4-7). It is not an easy part for all them, but again she has to cope by her internal drives which push her to try and pursue this dream in as much as each time she keeps on hitting the wall. It is very true for any sane person to agree to the fact that oppression is like a wall that impedes on someone’s dream; a dream that one would like to pursue but again her interests are not being met completely. This is a wall that blocks anything that she would like to pursue and leaves her with no personal opinions about her dreams as such.

T.S Eliot is also another author who has for some times faced criticism for his constant misogynistic treatment of ladies through his poetry. There are also a few who have been able to consider the role that he portrays women in supporting his poetic themes. The narrative that is played at “The love song of J. Alfred Prufrock” indicates pure dominance by women; this is done both contemporarily and mythically; they have been able to illustrate the brutal relationship that exists between the two sides of gender in our society (Eliot, Pp. 1-3). The said an intensely personal relationship is considered to be the same analogy just as the relation of the individual and the society; just as any other individual, women must also be able to decide to either speak in support of or against their oppressors or rather just keep silent or accept their circumstances. In this case, one must be able to understand the fact when they feel that they are much oppressed, they need to ensure that they stand up for themselves and not wait for someone to do it for them. One should not wait for someone else to do it for them but rather show their bravery by ensuring that they work so hard to the best of their knowledge to kick out any form of oppression that might be taking place as such. They should either stand up or keep quiet and stop complaining; there is no need for one to keep on complaining yet they do not stand up for the best that they think of (Eliot, Pp. 4-5). Either option will again place the women at risk of more advanced subjugation; this way the scenography of this whole poems already acts as sufficient backdrop to a form of a crippled social world that is well populated by individuals who are trying to see their voice being heard.

Oppression by Hughes is another serious poem that also looks to this thematic expression. In this poem, the party narrates not only a poem but also a lyric that has no character in it. The title of this same poem also offers an atmosphere that is intense already. The first stanza even in itself already places the idea of oppression in the right context where we see that people are in a position where there are no dreams which are not available and also no songs that are also available to the singers as well. He believes that if the world were free from oppression, then people would sing freely and dream freely, but again it is as a result of continuous oppression that the same people cannot do this but only when the oppressor unties the knots as such.

Oral and Written Communication

A presentation can achieve a number of things that a written communication cannot accomplish. A presentation draws the audience and the speaker together, in terms of ideas and individual personalities, mostly in meetings, lectures, and seminars. Through the process of direct communication, the audience gets to respect the speaker for her or his ideas and the knowledge that he or she has about a certain subject (Alberts, Nakayama, & Martin, 2015).

A presentation manages to reach the hearts of the audience (Alberts et al., 2015). This is because it mainly incorporates aspects of art such as short speeches, dramatizing, and singing. For example, in a presentation that is organized for ill people or people who are dying of hunger, well-wisher may be touched to offer donations to buy medical equipment, medicines, and food by just singing about poverty and hunger.

A presentation is able to create a picture in the minds of the audience (Alberts et al., 2015). It often incorporates non-verbal communication. Whenever a speaker is stressing on a certain point, he or she makes use of gestures, such as hand movements. This non-verbal communication helps the audience to understand the context more through the creation of a mental picture.

Through a presentation, the audience can easily probe the speaker to clarify certain points. The public at the presentation consists of not only literate, but also illiterate people. The illiterate audience requires special attention such as further interpretation so that they can understand the message. Therefore, a presentation gives them that chance.

Written communication has many disadvantages compared to a presentation. It is more time-consuming than the oral presentation, and also is harder to understand sometimes (Alberts et al., 2015). Written communication costs more time for both the writer and the reader. It takes less time for a speaker to prepare the presentation and present it. In addition, the content of a presentation is summarized, hence a listener only needs less time to understand the idea compared to written information. Moreover, during a presentation, a person who doesn’t understand the content can easily probe for further explanation. On the other hand, written communication does not make sense for an illiterate person unless there is someone else to explain the content.

Written communication is also more expensive compared to oral presentation (Alberts et al., 2015). It requires a great deal of resources such as a pen, ink, paper, computers, printers, and typewriters. A lot of people may be required to prepare written assignments, and these aforementioned materials needed to do it can make written communication more expensive. This distinguishes it from the oral communication, where a presenter only needs material for and a little time for preparation.

There are certain things that I can learn as a speaker. Firstly, I should make use of non-verbal communication more often. It makes it easier for the audience to understand the idea. Apart from that, it makes my presentation more interesting, in such a way that the audience gets neither bored nor sleepy. Secondly, I should always give my audience a chance to comment, and also probe further on unclear points. Feedback from the audience offers a platform for the improvement of future presentations. They can also be used to gauge the level to which the public has understood the material. Giving the people a chance for probing further helps them to understand difficult points.
